Nemi strawberry festival

Nemi sits next to the small volcanic lake of the same name and, as well as its stunning, leafy location, is famed for its strawberries.

Visitors in May may like to take part in the 'Sagra delle Fragola', the famous strawberry festival, and eat as many as they like.

More about the history of Nemi

They are more precisely 'fragoline di bosco' which literally means they grow wild in the woods.

As the name suggests they are extremely small, more like regular berries.

May is the month for the strawberry harvest at Nemi and related celebrations last until the end of June.

If you want to get there for the main event do so for the first Sunday of June. On that day girls in traditional costume offer punnets to all the passers by.

This generous gesture by the local comune originated just after the First World War.
