One of the first hints that Spring is on the way is the Festival of Songs in Sanremo.
Ever since the mid 1950's this glitzy annual event has provided a fascinating window on the world of show business in Italy, as well as a regular marketing opportunity for the city of Sanremo.
The build up to the week of the festival is always interesting.
Once the name of the host has been announced there is continuous behind the scenes lobbying by musical acts, agents and the up-and-coming to feature on the stage of the Ariston Theatre. And we're treading lightly here.
In the past there was always two parallel competitions during the festival. The main competition is for established artists and this is supported by a newcomers competition, although this has been scrapped for now.
The latter is less a talent show than a prime time spot for the record company's new products, although acts must be selected on merit.
Ask anyone in Italy if they will be watching the festival and most will reply negatively. They will say they last found it interesting when 'Volare' won in 1960 and it's been downhill ever since.
Don't believe a word of it, 'Sanremo is Sanremo!'
