Guide to Le Marche (58)
START YOUR VISIT TO LE MARCHE HERE
A tour of the region of Le Marche should include the towns and cities of Ancona & the Monte Conero, Pesaro, Urbino, Ascoli Piceno, Loreto, Macerata, San Leo and Acqualagna.
We advise reading as much as possible before making a visit, as the region is full of unexpected treasures and history.
Dig out local contacts and avoid the ever sinuous expatriate holiday house circuit which has just discovered the territory and wants you to stay with them for the real, authentic Marche experience.
From a branch of the Sabine tribe establishing itself in Ascoli Piceno and the Roman roads criss crossing the territory, to the Renaissance spirit of Urbino and the support the region gave to the Risorgimento. Even the famous 'formaggio di fossa' may have originated as a result of an invasion.
Le Marche can be visited in lush swathes of territory connected by sweeping, open country roads. The province of Pesaro Urbino borders both Emilia Romagna and the Republic of San Marino and seems to look culturally north than the rest of the region.
The Romagnolo coast runs seamlessly across the border to Fano and onto Senigallia, both Roman encampments. From Ancona don't miss the natural beauty of the Monte Conero and the nearby seaside resort of Sirolo. A little further way are the perfectly formed Osimo, Recanati and a further south Fermo and Offida.
The spectacular and mythical Sibillini hills, where Pontius Pilate is said to be buried, will take you the border of Umbria and tranquil abbeys such as Fiastra.

Reading amongst the Olive Trees
Olive Oil and wine on Sunday, June 17, 2012 in the afternoon from 17 to 20 at the Farm "COLLE NOBILE" in San Marcello, province of Ancona.
After finishing the operations of pruning and with the plants getting ready to bloom, with the long days and with the temperatures pleasant, the "COLLE NOBILE" Farm in San Marcello thought of an afternoon spent in the olive grove with a glass of wine.
This tasty idea became enhanced by their extra-virgin oils, listening to songs and parts of the book " SPIRITI BOLLENTI" written by Raethia Corsini, as she reads stories and curiosities about chefs she spoke of in her book
Names such as Gualtiero Marchesi, Carlo Cracco, until you arrive at our Uliassi and Mauro Moreno Cedroni.
Why in the olive grove? Because Italian food was born from the Extra Virgin Olive Oil.
So live a few hours in the nature, enjoying the precious nectars of Marche land... Oil and wine... with us!
Sant'Angelo in Vado in Le Marche
Sant'Angelo in Vado is one of most fascianting places to visit in the province of Pesaro e Urbino in Le Marche. Of Roman origin, the town is located in the high valley of Metauro River and sourronded by some of the most the picturesque countryside of the region.
The original Tifernum Mataurense can still be seen from the spectacular ruins of the ancient Roman Villa of Domus del Mito with its magnificent mosaics which date from the I century BC. Do drop by the the Archaeological Museum of Antiquarium for some more precious remains and ornaments.
The Longobards renamed the place St.Angelo in honour of St. Michael Arcangelo. 'In Vado' was added after, but it is still not clear if it refers to the ford of the river or 'guado', or 'vado', a kind of plant which grows by the same river and was used as a dye to give textiles a blue colour.
Offida Carnival in Le Marche
The Offida Carnival is very ancient and still follows the same calendar as its origin. Its official opening is on 17 January, St. Anthony's Day. The last two Sundays are devoted to friends and relatives, while Saturdays are animaded by joyful night - long parties held within Serpente Aureo Theatre.
Among the events not to be missed there is "Bov Fint" (the fake ox corrida) and the extraordinary parade of "Vlurd" which, taking place the last day, represents the end of Carnival. Local people and worldwide visitors come to Offida.
Riviera del Conero and beaches
The Riviera del Conero is the closest resort area to Ancona. What is distinctive about the area is the huge Monte Conero headland dominating the coastline in a stretch of the Adriatic sea flat for miles either way.
The area, and especially the Monte Conero, is therefore an unusual microclimate of beaches, reefs, coves and cliffs. It is an area of uncontaminated beauty. From the towns of Numana and Camerano there are also day trips to bays inaccessible by land, two examples being 'Gabiani' (Seagulls) and 'Due Sorelle' (Two Sisters).
Marche DOC Wines
The Regione Marche has produced a handy fold-up guide to the DOC wines of the region. It is very useful for quick scanning and to avoid any embarassment before the waiter takes your order. Best of all it has a list of 13 typical Marche recipes with the ideal wine scribbled underneath.
For example, a dish of 'Maiale Ubriaco' or 'drunken pig' should be accompanied with a 'Lacrima di Morro d'Alba', while a 'Scampi in Porchetta' should be eaten with a bottle of Falerio dei Colli Ascolani.
Brodetto and Marche seafood tradition
The sea off the Marche coast is especially rich with crustaceans and all types of squid, shrimps and cuttlefish. In fact, the region produces some 10% of the country's total fish catch and although much is for export and for sale elsewhere in the country, the local cuisine is not short of a few seafood recipes.
'Brodetto' is the most typical and, as the name suggests, is a type of soup made from the left overs and unwanted scraps that couldn't be sold in the market. Traditionally, it was the daily meal for many workers in the ports and was considered a complete meal.
Montappone Hat Museum
The tradition of hat making in this hill top town grew out of a local legend passed on from generation to generation. It evolved out of the story of a young peasant who wanted to marry the daughter of the local king.
Only possessing the grain in his field he was initially rebuffed. Yet, inspired by the criss cross flying of three birds as the sun set, he set about making a hat weaving the stems of his crop. Impressed by his dexterity the King accepted the proposal on condition he could wear the hat at his daughter's wedding.
Needless to say the straw hat became a popular local symbol of good fortune and eventual prosperity.
Pica Festival
The settlement of Monterubbiano in the province of Fermo holds its annual festival during Pentecoste. Its meaning is based around an understanding of the word 'pica'.
Portonovo
Portonovo lies on one side of the majestic 576m high Monte Conero, the huge headland spur which juts into the Adriatic coast in Le Marche as if it had arrived there by mistake.
There seems to be no good reason for its existence when you consider the rest of the flat coast from north to south.
Ostra and the Wine Label Museum
Does the word 'ostracized' have any link to the town of Ostra in Le Marche? We don't know, but we do know that this small city of approx. 6000 people has always enjoyed the protection of the burghers of the port of Ancona, which is itself 35km away.
