  • Camerino, University City

Camerino is a wonderfully located medieval town set in the green rolling hills of the province of Macerata and is known for one of the oldest universities in Italy. Situated in the heart of a region where such greats as Raffaello, Bramante and Rossini were born, the immediate territory can boast the finest examples of Gothic painting in Le Marche. These include the frescoes of the schools of painting of Camerino which paved the way for people like Gentile di Fabriano. Indeed, the influence of Giovanni Boccato and Girolamo, both from Camerino, led directly to Venetian artists Carlo and Vittore…

Montappone Hat Museum

Published in Le Marche Itineraries
The tradition of hat making in this hill top town grew out of a local legend passed on from generation to generation. It evolved out of the story of a young peasant who wanted to marry the daughter of the local king. Only possessing the grain in his field he was initially rebuffed. Yet, inspired by the criss cross flying of three birds as the sun set, he set about making a hat weaving the stems of his crop. Impressed by his dexterity the King accepted the proposal on condition he could wear the hat at his daughter's wedding. Needless…

Riviera del Conero and Beaches

Published in Le Marche Itineraries
The Riviera del Conero is the closest resort area to Ancona in Le Marche. What is distinctive about the area is the huge Monte Conero headland dominating the coastline in a stretch of the Adriatic sea flat for miles either way. The area, and especially the Monte Conero, is therefore an unusual microclimate of beaches, reefs, coves and cliffs. It is an area of uncontaminated beauty. From the towns of Numana and Camerano there are also day trips to bays inaccessible by land, two examples being 'Gabiani' (Seagulls) and 'Due Sorelle' (Two Sisters).

The last two Sundays are devoted to friends and relatives, while Saturdays are animaded by joyful night - long parties held within Serpente Aureo Theatre. Among the events not to be missed there is "Bov Fint" (the fake ox corrida) and the extraordinary parade of "Vlurd" which, taking place the last day, represents the end of Carnival. Local people and worldwide visitors come to Offida.

Fano

Published in Le Marche Itineraries
The ancient Romans obviously had high hopes for their seaside base in today's province of Ancona in Le Marche. The city was actually named after 'Fanum Fortunae'. A monumental arch still stands in honor to the Emperor as does much of the wall built to surround the original Roman encampment. Indeed, the older parts of the town have kept the original street pattern as trodden by the Roman Legions all those years ago. The main square of the town continues the theme with its 'Fountain of Fortune'. It features a bronze statue of 'Dea Fortuna' outside the neo-classical theater of…
