The Strada del Vino Colli di Maremma or Maremma Hills Wine Route is the best way to discover six distinct wines and wine growing areas of the south Tuscany coast.
Maremma Hills Wine Route
The zones and wines of interest are Parrina, Morellino di Scansano, Capalbio, Bianco di Pitigliano, Sovana and Ansonica Costa dell'Argentario.
All all located in the province of Grosseto and looking at a map of the wine routes there is a fair bit of overlap.
For example, half of the area which produces Morellino di Scansano is also dedicated to Bianco di Pitigliano, while the half of this latter zone not dedicated to Morellino di Scansano produces Sovana.
Ansonica Costa dell'Argentario covers the Monte Argentario and the immediate coastal area of Orbetello. But it also includes the tiny Parrina wine producing zone.
These two are themselves incorporated into the large Capalbio area.
Parrina doc are basically the wines of the comune of Orbetello. Four are produced; a red, red reserve, rosé and white.
The white is made from Tuscan Trebbiano (Procanico), Ansonica and/or Chardonnay with the addition of a maximum of 20% other non aromatic grapes.
It is a straw yellow color with a mellow flavor and keen bouquet. The taste is dry, smooth with a slightly bitter bottom.
Try it with a Spanish eel dish from the lagoon.
