ITINERARY ONE - Spoleto - Monteluco - Campello sul Clitunno
Leaving Spoleto towards Monteluco there are two 12th century churches: the first is the Church of Saint Peter, the second the Church of San Giuliano. From Monteluco admire the Monastery of Saint Francis dating from the 15th century. Stop at the Belvedere vantage point for a spectacular view of the Spoleto plain.
To return take the SS Flaminia in the direction of Foligno for 7 km until the small hamlet of S.Giacomo with its 15th century castle and 13th century parish church adorned with frescoes by Giovanni Spagna. Next is Campello sul Clitunno, famous for being the source of the River Clitunno, the so called Fonti, as well as the Tempietto dating from the 5th century. The immediate zone also boasts no less than 5 churches from the 12th to 17th centuries and two castles; Barnabiti and Pissignano. Reach the summit of Monte Serano (1429 meters) before returing to Spoleto.
ITINERARY TWO - Spoleto - Castel Ritaldi - Giano del'Umbria
From Spoleto follow the signs for Montefalco. Turn off at Pontebari in the direction of Morgnano where you can admire the recenlty restored 13th century castle. Returning to Pontebari, take the road north again to Montefalco. S.Brizio is on the left where the remains of the 13th century parish church can be visited.
Further north is Castel Rinaldi. Do visit the castle, the churches of S.Marina, S.Nicola, the Pieve of S.Gregorio in Nido and the Sanctuary of the Madonna della Bruna dating from the 16th century. Further north is Giano dell'Umbria with its 12th century castle and churches of S.Francesco and S.Michele Arcangelo. The abbey of S.Felice was rebuilt in the 12th century and the castle of Montecchio dates from the 13th to 16th centuries.
By way of a small extension, drop into the town of Bastardo near Montecchio just to tell your friends you have been there.
