If you are interested in cherries, pies and balsamic vinegar then head to the town of Vignola near Modena in then Spring.

The name 'Vignola' probably comes from the Latin "vineola", which means little vineyard. It was originally an ancient Etruscan village on the way between Parma and Bologna along the Panaro river.

Surprisingly, Vignola is famous today not for its vines, but for its cherry cultivation. The best time of the year to go therefore is during the Spring when the cherry blossom fills the trees and orchards.

The local festival at the same time celebrates this important moment for the town and surrounding area with many events and gastronomic stands filling the centre of Vignola and concludes with a colourful parade of flowers and floats.

Cherries in the zone come in many varieties and mature in different stages; first the 'Durone Bigarreau', then the 'Mora di Vignola', 'Nero I' and 'Anella' with the 'Nero II' and 'Ciliegione' by mid June.

For the rest of the year, the Vignola tourism authorities have grouped together the principal localities and main annual events in a gastronomic route or 'Strada dei Vini e dei Sapori'.

Its full title is 'The Wine and Flavors Route of the Cities of the Cherry Castles in the Hills Between Bologna and Modena'. Well, 15 territories, 2 mountain communities, 2 regional parks, 23 associations and over 5000 private cultivators need a lot of space.

Other events to look out for are the Half Marathon of 'Traditional Balsamic Vinegar' in Spilamberto, the 'Festival of Curious Flavours' (see image above) in Casalecchio di Reno and 'Mortadella Please' in Zola Predosa.
