The Colli Orientali del Friuli or the eastern hills of Friuli are home to over 100 wine producing businesses and over 80,000 hectoliters of D.O.C. is produced from the region every year. How much is that. Well, an awful lot.

Cividale is the historical and cultural capital for the growers and since 1991 has been holding one of the most important festivals in the whole of Friuli Venzia and Giulia - the 'Mittelfest'.

Nine days of of prose, music, dance, cinema begin on the 18th July. The event also attracts artists and intellectuals from around Europe and is a good excuse to try the local wine in a refined setting.

The main wine towns running south from Tarcento to Cividale sound like the heroes of the Four Musketeers. They are Nimis, Attimis, Faedis and Torreano. Further on visitors should pass by Prepotto, Premariacco, Manzano and Buttrio.

Manzano is one of the most interesting of the lot. It is where the Abbey of Rosazzo is located, one of the few wine producing centers that carried on during a cruel medieval period for the region. It is an extremely mild zone and the vines share the slopes with olive trees.

While these towns act as the commercial center of the wine trade, their are 97 'Aziende Agricole Consorziale' who produce and bottle their own wine.
