Sacile in the province of Pordenone was known at one time as the 'Giardino della Serenissima'. A place to relax, seek calm and simply wander aimlessly amidst the beautifully built palazzi, flowered streets and rich, green environment created by the Livenza river.

This period of splendour and culture flourished when the town was in Venetian hands in the 16th century. It lasted until Garibaldi's men hit the scene in the mid 1800's and was momentarily gone for ever during bitter fighting of the First World War.

The Piancavallo Cellina Livenza tourism authorities describes the town as being a series of small 'borghi'.

Each are distinct and include 'Borgo Sartori di Borgoricco', 'Contrada Mercato', 'Contrade del Duomo', 'Campo Marzio', 'Borgo San Gregorio' and 'Contrada dell'Oca'. Of special interest are Piazza del Popolo for the Venetian palaces, the ex-convent which is now a restaurant, the 'Torrione della Repubblica' and the ancient fortifications at Prà Castelvecchio.

Of the 'palazzi' note should be made of the Palazzo Biglia, complete with frescoes by Montemezzano as well as an internal courtyard on the river, and Palazzo Ovio-Gobbi for its library, historic archive and parish museum.

The cathedral or Duomo is perhaps the best place to start discovering the town. Originally built in the 9th century it was given a makeover during the 15th which has survived. It contains priceless artworks, most notably a canvas by Andra Vicentino.

Do visit Sacile on the 15th August when the 'Sagra dei Osei' is held. Over 7 centuries old, this cultural event includes wine and honey distribution. The sweet life indeed.

The best restaurant in town is 'Pedrocchino' on Piazza IV Novembre. Fresh fish guaranteed.
