PIEMONTE TRAVEL INFORMATION AND TOURISM SUGGESTIONS

Lake Maggiore and the smaller Lake D'Orta are the premier visitor destinations in Piemonte and they include the towns of Stresa, Baveno and Lesa.

Alba and Asti come next for the truffles and wine of course, but are in fact part of a larger enogastronomic zone which links these two cities with much more picturesque localities such as La Morra, Bra, Barolo, Barbaresco and Monforte d'Alba all the way to the Monferrato.

Torino or Turin took the opportunity of the Winter Olympics in 2006 to reinvent its post industrial image and is more than worth a short break.

West towards the Alps and the main ski resorts are overlooked historical gems such as the Sacra of San Michele in Avigliana.

The rest of the region remains to be discovered. For example Dogliani and Murazzano are fabulous cheese making zones in the south towards the Liguria border.

And just before that border is Montezemolo and the precipitous motorway to the coast. Not for the faint hearted.

With perhaps a special mention to Ivrea and its annual orange throwing festival, the Upper Po Valley and Biella, the Manchester of Italy!

Crumiri biscuits recipe from Piemonte

Published in Piemonte Recipes
This is a famous Piemontesi biscuit whose origins can be found at Casale Monferrato. The history is well documented and the recipe was invented by Domenico Rossi and we were lucky enough to recently visit the famous location where it all began. The best 'Krumiri' are dark in color and contain no preservatives whatsoever. They were named after a popular liqueur of the time. That was in 1878. www.krumirirossi.it

Official Truffle Charter

Published in Piemonte Food
Truffles are especially mysterious and secretive things. Whether black or white, do we know really enough to bluff our way through a Piemonte wine book launch. Here are a few tips we are happy to share.

White truffle route in lower Piemonte

Published in Piemonte Itineraries
The Alba white truffle route in lower Piemonte is an itinerary through the provinces of Alessandria, Asti and Cuneo. These are best zones for finding the prized white truffle of Piedmont, the Magnatum Pico Tuber. In fact, its not all about Alba, where the National White Truffle Fair is held every October. When you see the intensive wine production dominating the hills near Alba, you realise they have to get their truffles from somewhere else.

White Truffles from Alba

Published in Piemonte Food
From late December to just before Christmas, the white truffle is king in Alba. It commands the attention and money of locals and visitors, who hunger to buy or taste it. In the shops, it is displayed under glass and sold by the gram at about € 400-500,00 per one hundred grams. To be honest, the truffles these days dont necessarily come from the local woods around the Ferrero Chocolate Factory, but more likely the unspoilt zones of the Monferrato area in the south-eastern part of Piedmont. Yet Alba remains, as it always has, the key market for the commercialisation…

Biella Cheese and Wine Route

Published in Piemonte Food
Could the cheese and wine parties in Biella be the best in Italy? Certainly, the 'sargnon' cheese is worth talking about. It is a 'goloso' fermented mixture of rum, grappa, gorgonzola and other spicy cheeses. The well signposted wine route to the east of the city takes in Sostegno, Villa del Bosco, Mottalciata and Candelo amongst other towns and villages, as well as the zones five DOC wines (Bramaterra, Canavese, Coste della Sesia, Lessona and Erbaluce).
