PIEMONTE TRAVEL INFORMATION AND TOURISM SUGGESTIONS

Lake Maggiore and the smaller Lake D'Orta are the premier visitor destinations in Piemonte and they include the towns of Stresa, Baveno and Lesa.

Alba and Asti come next for the truffles and wine of course, but are in fact part of a larger enogastronomic zone which links these two cities with much more picturesque localities such as La Morra, Bra, Barolo, Barbaresco and Monforte d'Alba all the way to the Monferrato.

Torino or Turin took the opportunity of the Winter Olympics in 2006 to reinvent its post industrial image and is more than worth a short break.

West towards the Alps and the main ski resorts are overlooked historical gems such as the Sacra of San Michele in Avigliana.

The rest of the region remains to be discovered. For example Dogliani and Murazzano are fabulous cheese making zones in the south towards the Liguria border.

And just before that border is Montezemolo and the precipitous motorway to the coast. Not for the faint hearted.

With perhaps a special mention to Ivrea and its annual orange throwing festival, the Upper Po Valley and Biella, the Manchester of Italy!

  • Valleys of Cuneo

    Published in Piemonte Itineraries
The Italian Cross Country Skiing championship race held at Demonte in the Valle Stura is a convenient excuse to look at the whole complex of valleys west of Cuneo. In fact, the valleys are not so much west of Cuneo as practically wrapped around the town in all directions, except the north east. If all roads lead to Rome, then all Alpine passes lead to Cuneo in this part of Piemonte. The Valley of the River Stura stretches from the gates of Cuneo at Borgo S.Dalmazzo to Argentera beneath the Colle della Maddalena. It is a real valley in the…

Lake Maggiore Day Trips

Published in Piemonte Itineraries
The Consorzio Operatori Turistici Lago Maggiore based in Stresa has produced a small guide to the zone. It's not so much an itinerary as a list of places you should not miss, so here goes.   THE BORROMEO ISLANDS Isola Pescatori is the fisherman's island and the smallest. Full of narrow and ancient alleys it's a place for lunch. Isola Madre or mother island is the largest and described as a huge floating botanical garden with plants from around the world. Don't tread on the peacocks. Isola Bella, the island of beauty, is home to the Borromeo Palace and Italian…

Barge Rice Festival

The 'Fiera del Riso' or rice festival take place in Crocera di Barge in the province of Cuneo. The fair takes place in the last week of April and offers a chance to find out more about rice production in Italy. One of the fine risotto dishes to taste in the zone is made with 'zucca' or pumpkin. To try it, as well as other dishes made with the local products,…

Upper Po Valley Food Route

Published in Piemonte Food
We received a bright little brochure from the Comunità Montana Valli Po Bronda e Infernotto recently. The 26 pages map out various gastronomic routes in an area which stretches to Saluzzo in the east, Crissolo in the west and Baglio Piemonte in the north. This area is known as the Upper Po Valley. As well as a list of restaurants and fine places to stay, the booklet suggests incredible menus and a calendar of gastronomic appointments. One of the most typical of the menus goes something like this. We'll leave it in Italian for the full effect.

Biella, Manchester of Italy

Published in Piemonte Itineraries
Biella has had a number of names. It was originally called 'Sar' meaning waterway, then 'Brich' meaning 'high ground' then 'ontano' meaning 'alder tree'. No prizes for guessing the type of terrain then. The name Biella only surfaced around 826 AD, almost a thousand years after the Romans first got there and called it Bugella. We have to thank the Holy Roman Empire who protected the town from barbaric invasion by building the perimeter wall in the Xth century, then the Vescovo of Vercelli for the present urban layout as he sought to keep the town out of the hands…
