The castles of Alto Adige are a real treat. They range from immense ruins and private homes, to publicly owned centers and holiday homes where you can live like a medieval count for at least one night.
The tourism authorities of Alto Adige are able to provide any visitor with a full list of over 100 such castles. They all have names as improbable as their setting such as 'Goldegg, 'Torgglkeller' and 'Ubergriessenstein' reflecting ancient historical ties with north and central Europe.
We like the 'Castelbello' which is one of the most characteristic of the Val Venosta. Perched on a rocky outcrop it has been owned by the family of Count Hendl for four centuries.
Before that it took almost as long to build, work beginning in the 1200's. If you visit it take the opportunity to marvel at the frescoes in the in-house chapel.
