You know the ski season is over when the 'stagione balneare' opens. Typically, that's the third week of April at Plan de Corones in the Val Pusteria, Alto Adige.
The waters of the mountain lakes might be a bit nippy at 2°-3°, but why not hire a rowing boat and soak in the sun at the very least. To celebrate the change in the seasons the local tourism authorities lay on the 'Lackenfest' or 'Festa della Pozza' spring event.
This event is limited to 12 specially made vehicles which slide down a precipitous ramp and hurl into the freezing water. The winner is judged on 'slideability', 'fantasy' and the most extravagant bathing costume.
Recently, they inaugurated the 'Big Air Cool Water Trophy' where snow boarders and skiers can try out the ramp for themselves. The winner will be the one who lands in the deepest water and gets out alive.
For non-masochists the event is accompanied by offerings of traditional white 'würstel' and live music. It all starts at midday. Prompt.
Alpine food lovers should also note the following regular appointments: Cucina in Strada - every Thursday in Falzes in July and August; Learn Tirol Recipes - every Tuesday from June; October in Raineggwirt a Valdora.
