Prosecco Wine Route

The Strada del Vino Prosecco or Prosecco wine route was the first of its kind in Italy. It is 47 km long and winds around the hills or 'colli' of Conegliano, Feletto, Quartier del Piave and Valdobbiadene. This countryside, with its mild climate and ancient wine-making traditions, provides the ideal habitat for the vines that produce this delicious white wine famous throughout the world.

Surprisingly, it has only been 100 years that the vineyards in this part of Treviso have been producing such a delicacy. There are three types of Prosecco.

The first is Prosecco Tranquillo, a white especially suitable with a heavy antipasti. The second, Prosecco Spumante is the fizzy version and ideal as an aperitif served cool at 6° at any time. Lastly, but not least, the 'Prosecco frizzante dolce' best served at 8°-10° as a dessert wine.

Today, Prosecco is the second spumante of Italy. The first, we hazard a guess, must be Asti with Franciacorta gaining ground. Look out for the 'Botteghe del Vino Autorizzate' symbol which guarantees the authenticity of the wine.

Perhaps it should be classed as number one, as the word Prosecco is now synonymous with any white fizzy wine. It almost defines the category.

Read on for the flavours of the Alta Marca Trevigiana and the Prosecco Spring festival.
