Ravello

Anyone who has been to Ravello cannot fail to be amazed by the climb along the narrowest of roads through a gorge in the Amalfi Coast.

The road drops then rises before opening up onto that classic panoramic view. It's a stunner.

That view, of course, is the backdrop for the annual Ravello Festival inside the grounds of the Villa Rufolo.

Shortly, a new auditorium will open which will allow an extension to the concert season and bring more tourism throughout the year.

Here are 6 things to keep in mind when you make a visit to this remarkable place.

1. DH Lawrence set his novel Lady Chatterley's Lover at Villa Cimbrone, while Jackie Kennedy spent three weeks here before the tragedy of Dallas.

2. The city was first popular with nobles of the Maritime Republic of Amalfi who used it as a defense having rebelled against the Doge. They made their money trading wool which was spun at the local mill.

3. Inside the cathedral there is a precious panel depicting Saint Michael Archangel defeating Satan. It is a 16th century work by Giovanni Angelo d'Amato from Maiori. One of the most ancient religious buildings in Ravello is the Church of San Michele Arcangelo.

4. As well as the lemons, oranges, mozzarella and provola cheese, you should be eating cannelloni and perciatelli, the latter a bucatini pasta dish in a tomato & scamorza cheese or scorpion fish sauce.

5. Working coral has always been a traditional handicraft. Visit the Camo Coral Museum and admire engraved mother of pearl from Roman times.

6. The Ferriere Valley Nature Reserve was instituted in 1872 and is, surprisingly, the only protected area of the whole Amalfi coast
