SARDINIA TRAVEL INFORMATION AND TOURISM SUGGESTIONS

The region of Sardinia includes Cagliari, Nuoro, Sassari, Oristano, the Costa Smeralda, Oristano, Alghero and Santa Teresa di Gallura.

For over 40 years it was really only about two months along the Emerald Coast following the creation of the exclusive Consorzio Costa Smeralda.

Low cost flights and independent travel are opening up the island and extending the tourist season in Sardinia.

Sardinia was always attractive for its mineral resoruces. The zone of Carbonia in the deep southwest is aptly named.

The inhabitants also tended to remain inland rearing sheep and livestock. This explains the origin of Sardinia's fine cheese making tradition and skills, still exported to other parts of Italy even today. The prehistoric nuraghi dot the whole island and aspects of these ancient belief systems remain in numerous local and annual festivals.

The wild zone of the Gennergentu is one of Europe's great untouched green zones. The continent's largest remaining oak forest is here.

Neverthelesss, today the atraction of the coast and Sardinia's 166 fine beaches is too strong. Scuba diving can be practised anywhere, but especially La Maddalena Archipelago in the extreme north and the Protected Marine Area of Capo Carbonara in the extreme south off the coast of Villasimìus.

  • Museum of Genna Maria

    Published in Sardinia Itineraries
The park and museum of Genna Maria sits on the top of a hill with an enviable view of the Gulf of Cagliari, far off Oristano and even the mountains of Sulcis-Iglesiente. It took thirty years to excavate the zone which for centuries had been a simple field for growing grain. It was worth the effort as one of central Sardinia's most impressive bronze age 'nuraghic' complexes saw the light of day again. The primitive tower or 'mastio' is at the center and is the oldest part of the settlement, dating from around 1400 BC.

Sacred Sardinian Bread

Published in Sardinia Food
An ancient Sardinian proverb states 'Chie hat pane, mai no morit' or 'with bread you will never die' and, as you can expect it plays a fundamental part in the history, culture and traditions of the island. The preparation of bread was the work of the women of the towns and villages and they worked to a precise rhythm approaching the process with all the care of raising a child. For special occasions such as festivals and weddings the making of bread became an art form with incredible imagination and creativity. Bread could be eaten in any different ways. T…

Nuoro

Published in Sardinia Itineraries
Nuoro was only really mentioned in historical records (as Nugoro) from late medieval times when it offered a safe haven for the inhabitants of Ottana who had run away from endemic malaria. They must have been attracted by the fresh air wipping in from all sides and the work to be found at this hub for the zone's large agricultural trade. Do visit the Museum of Sardinian Life and Popular Traditions in the city. At the center of the Nuoro is the cathedral dedicated to 'Santa Maria della Neve'. Quite particular bearing in mind Sardinia's image as a fabulous summer…

Carbonia Iglesias

Published in Sardinia Itineraries
Carbonia is 70 km west of Cagliari and is located near Monte Sirai. It is one of the oldest settled areas in this part of the island thanks to the abundance of mineral deposits. No prizes for guessing the origin of the name. It is an area of high archaeological interest and there are three museums dedicated to the theme. They are the 'Area Archeologica di Monte Sirai', the 'Civico Museo Archeologico' 'Villa Sulcis' and the 'Museo di Paleonologia e Speleogia 'Martel'. Maybe not for the casual tourist but if you want to find out about the ancient neolithic societies…

Small Guide to Ogliastra

Published in Sardinia Itineraries
The first thing you notice about the territory of Ogliastra in eastern Sardinia is the name. It may derive from the olive trees that which feature across the territory, or perhaps after the monolithic red porphyry rock of Pedra Longa pictured (Agugliastra) located along the Baunei coastline in front of the small port of Arbatax. What is for sure is that Ogliastra is commonly referred to as 'the amphitheater'. The  territory is effectively hemmed in by three mountainous massifs positioned in such a way as to present an impressive 180° backdrop to the coastline of Tyrrhenian Sea below. Specifically, the territory passes…

Pecorino Cheese of Sardinia

Published in Sardinia Food
The 'Latteria Sociale Cooperativa' of Nuoro is located towards the north east of the island. It was formed in 1938 when a group of local breeders decided to take on the process of transformation and commercialization of their milk products and is perhaps typical of the many pecorino cheese makers on the island. Today the co-operative employs around 10 regular workers and 12 seasonal employees who between then turn out 9,000 quintals of cheese each year. 80% of this amount consists of 'Percorino Romano' while 20% consists of other typical Sardinian cheese and Pecorino Crotonese. As for the cheese itself…
