Description

Montemigiano is a hill town just outside of Umbertide on the road from Nicconi to Cortona consisting of seven houses which have been rebuilt on original ruins that date back to the thirteenth century. Three of the houses and the chapel are built into the original fortification wall. The little chapel in this town is dedicated to St. Anthony and the people from the surrounding communities participate in a solemn parade through the tiny little borgo on this day. Then, after mass on the piazza, there is a blessing of the animals. Afterwards everyone sits down to a friendly picnic of wine and sandwiches. It's probably not worth a detour, but for those who are already nearby its a peaceful ceremony that bonds the participants to their patron and to each other.
