This Hedonistic Hiking walking tour starts in Florence and continues through the beautiful Umbrian countryside, visiting Anghiari, Sansepolcro, the Monte Cucco National Park and medieval Gubbio.   Witness the opening night of the exciting historical crossbow festival between Sansepolcro and Gubbio and enjoy stunning views from the  Apennines of Le Marche, Tuscany and Umbria.

Medieval Umbria Itinerary

DAY 1:

Meet at Florence Airport and transfer to Anghiari for a leisurely lunch and olive oil tasting.  Continue the short distance to Sansepolcro and stay for 2 nights in the delightful family-run Albergo Fiorentino.   After dinner join the locals to see the opening of the Palio della Balestra – a medieval crossbow competition between Sansepolcro and nearby Gubbio

DAY 2:

Visit to the town’s museum to see the renowned works by Piero della Francesca.  Drive up to the hermitage at Monte Casale and hike the Alpi della Luna with views across the Tiber Valley.   Dinner in a local restaurant.

DAY 3:

A short drive crosses the border into Umbria. Start the walk high above  Citta di Castello and hike through open farmland and woods to arrive at the Abbazia San Faustino, a beautiful small hotel converted from a former abbey. Dinner in the hotel restaurant

DAY 4:

A leisurely walk in the remote farmland near the Abbey of San Faustino. Visit an agriturismo for a tasting of local produce. Time to relax and enjoy the pool in the afternoon.

DAY 5:

Depart hotel and drive to the foothills of the Apennines and follow trails to Basilica of San Ubaldo, perched on a hill above the lovely medieval town of Gubbio. Arrive on foot at the delightful four star hotel in the heart of Gubbio overlooking the square. This is the base for the final 3 nights of the holiday. Dinner in a Slow Food restaurant on the outskirts of the town.

DAY 6:

Optional walk which follows an ancient merchant trail connecting the cities of Gubbio and Perugia. Exclusive guided tour of the thirteenth-century Benedictine abbey of Montelabate. The picnic today includes wine, cheese and olive oil from the estate. Explore Gubbio and visit the town museum and dine in the town this evening.

DAY 7:

The final hike is in the Monte Cucco National Park, a short distance from Gubbio. Start from a high alpine meadow and circle the summit of Monte Cucco, enjoying spectacular views. Return by van to Gubbio. Free time in the afternoon before our final dinner in a local restaurant

DAY 8:

Return to Florence
