The Pisan hills wine road proposes three itineraries which wind their way through the territory south east of the River Arno, as it flows from Lucca to Pisa almost to the gates of Volterra.
You cannot really lose your way as the vineyards, farms and wine cellars are pointed out by suitably iconic roads signs.
Bear in mind that you will be driving past numerous small villages and wine growing zones, each with its own character and history.
Not least, you will notice subtle changes in the food and dishes offered as well as the taste of your wine.
Of special interest is the Cesto Pisano, a chestnut wood basket of delicacies from Pisa countryside tradtiion.
The basket includes cherries from Lari, San Miniato white truffles, San Colombana sweet grapes as well as honey, olive oil and selected cheeses.
We quote the Pisan tourist authorities: "A delicious offer. The 'Cesto Pisano' is a delicious souvenir to take you back home to enjoy even longer, colors, tastes, flavors and all the traditions related to this landscape".
The wines you will be drinking are Chianti DOCG, Toscano IGT, Vin Santo del Chianti DOC and Colli dell'Etruria Centrale DOC.
But also the little known San Torpé DOC white wine from the Pisa area.
It is made of at least 75% Trebbiano Toscano grapes and 25% from other white grapes from the zone. A pale yellow wine it is characterised by a vinuous, bright fragrance and is dry and delicate.
The main stopovers along the Pisan wine route are Cenaia, Fauglia, Lorenzano, Casciana Terme, Chianni, Terricciolo, Peccioli, Palaia, La Roffo and San Miniato.
