The wine route of 'Colli di Candia e di Lunigiana' is located in the northern most part of Tuscany in the province of Massa Carrara.
The zone is your reference for such tourist destinations as the Golfo dei Poeti, Cinque Terre and numerous Tuscan art cities, but above all the Apuane Alps.
Head first to the Lunigiana, a zone named after the moon and the territory bordering Liguria separated by the Val di Magra river.
This was once one of Europe's principal pilgrim routes.
Everywhere you move you can see traces of waves of travellers as they left the Apennines and headed along the coast to Rome.
The local dishes still reflect the gastronomy of the period, not least in 'testi', a dish based on chestnuts washed down with the Candia dei Colli Apuani DOC wine of the Apuan hills.
The other wines to try are the Colli di Luni DOC, Val di Magra IGT and Toscana IGT.
Your route from north to south is Pontremoli, Filatteria, Bagnone, Villafranca, Liciana, Aulla, Fosdinovo, Sarzana, Carrara, Massa and Montignoso.
