Strada del Vino Colline Lucchesi e Montecarlo

The DOC wine road which takes in the Colline Lucchesi or Lucca hills and Montecarlo wines passes from the slopes of Pieve Santo Stefano and San Gennaro towards the hills of Porcari and Altopascio.

The vines are so well ordered that the landscape is formed into luxurious geometrical rows.

The terrain is composed from the detritus of the Apennines, mainly clay mixed with gravel from the Apuan Alps and by all accounts is excellent for wine production.

Together with a mild coastal climate, southern exposure and the high peaks protecting the zone from the north winds, the product is blessed with a high sugar content and full bouquet.

The wine was appreciated by the noble Pisans and Florentines centuries ago. We know this from commercial records from Lucca.

The residential area of Montecarlo is overlooked by a medieval castle with an almost complete circle of defensive walls and the slopes full of vines and olive trees.

From the castle you can see the hills of Lucca to the north and the plains and hills of the Valdinievole to the east.

Aside from the usual grape suspects, the vines are Greci, Grachetto, Semillon, Roussane, Syrah and Malvasia Nera.
