The cultivation of apples in the valley is fundamental to the local economy and the Val di Non has even put the fruit at the forefront of its tourism promotions and local identity abroad.
Orchards are scattered everywhere and small cooperatives combine forces to form an industry of notable size.
The variety of apples cultivated range from the ubiquitous 'Granny Smith' and 'Golden Delicious' to 'Rennet' , 'Stark', 'Elstar', 'Royal Gala', 'Morgenduft', 'Fuji', 'Stayman', 'Gloster' 'Jonagold', 'Idared' and 'Braeburn'.
All about apple strudels here, one of Italy's least celebrated local dishes.
From the 3rd November to the 14th January 2001 an exhibition was held celebrating the humble apple.
'Profumo, Mito, Storia' was the impressive tag line which translates to 'Scents, Myths and History'.
The exhibition took place at the Museo Tridentino di Scienze Naturali, via Calepina 14 in Trento and was a true interactive experience.
Visitors were able to wander through a garden, listen to music, taste recipes and learn how the apple in the region became an important asset to the economy.
