LIPARI CENTRE

The town of Lipari is located on the south east of the island of the same name and is the capital of the Archipelago. Around 10,000 people live here and Lipari was once described as 'minuscule' by Guy de Maupassant.

AROUND LIPARI

Look out for the district of Diana where you can still see the ancient Hellenistic Necroplois. Other historic remains can be viewed in the Museo Archeologico Eoliano. The Spanish castle still stands.

CANNETO - ACQUACALDA

The old white pumice works of Monte Pelato contrast spectacularly with the deep blue Mediterranean sea. The rusty red 'Forgia Vecchia' and 'Rocche Rosse' continue the colour theme.

VULCANO

The Vulcano island is closest to the Sicilian mainland and only 1.6 km from Lipari. Considered in ancient times to be the home of the God of Fire and the present form of the island dates from the eruption of 1890.

SALINA

Featured in the film 'Il Postino' by Troisi, the mountain 'Fossa delle Felici' is the highest point of the islands at almost 1000 meters. The zone of Salina is now a nature reserve. Cactus fruit and capers are produced here.

STROMBOLI

A very active volcano still throws lava into the sea on the north west side of the island making Stromboli an interesting holiday destination. Look out for the tiny island of Strombolicchio off the coast and only 43 meters above sea level.

ALICUDI

Alicudi is the most western of the islands and its high point is the extinct volcano at 675 meters. It is fabulous natural environment of beaches, grottoes and a crystal clear sea full of fish and marine life.

USTICA

Not part of the Eolie Islands but due east in the province of Palermo, Ustica is appreciated by those who love sub-acqua and became Italy's first declared marine reserve in 1986.
