The largest specimen of white truffle in the world was found in 1954 in the district of San Miniato in a village called Balconevisi. It weighed 2520 grams and traveled across the Atlantic to be donated to the President of the United States, Dwight Eisenhower.

It is of no surprise, therefore, that the National White Truffle Market is held in this wonderful little town in the province of Pisa every year during the last three weeks of November. It is an internationally recognized event hosting many gastronomic and cultural initiatives.
Apart from selling fresh truffles in the historical center, San Miniato is decked out with stalls and markets where people can eat, drink and taste the full range of typical products in season from all over Tuscany.
The truffles take the name 'San Miniato' from the market town where they have been historically distributed and sold. The famous white truffles can be found in a vast area hugging the province of Pisa all the way to the boundaries of Chianti Classico wine territory. This includes the southern part of the Arno valley, Lari, Casciana Terme, Crespina, Val di Cecina, Volterra and Montaione.
They are essentially the same 'fungi' as the truffles of Alba or Acqualagna and officially Tuber Magnatum Pico.
