San Zeno di Montagna
San Zeno has a fabulous panoramic view of Lake Garda looking west towards Trentino Alto Adige.
It is from here the visitor can take in Garda, Bardolino, Lazise and Torri del Benaco.
The first two are well known but the Lazise and Torri del Benaco are worth a mention, not least for their typical products.
The ancient port of Lazise had the dubious honor of being a tax raising centre for the Republic of Venice. Never have accountants been so flamboyantly dressed as they were then.
It is also a good place to pick up the distinctive olive oil produced in the zone and the traditional salumi, especially mortadella and the strangely named cacciatorini.
Torri del Benaco is home to a museum where visitors can learn all about the traditional fishing methods along this part of the lake as well as why and how olives and vines prosper so well so far north.
The typical products of San Zeno include cheese, chestnuts and truffles.
Look out for the Fiera di San Michele celebrated every October when the mountain pastures close for the winter
The chestnuts of San Zeno and the horse chestnuts of Baldo featured in dishes served up at the restaurants Costabella, Giardinetto Kus and La Casa degli Spiriti.
They go well with wines such as Garda Corvina Lamberti and the Bardolino Novello I Soli Lamberti.
Also ask about the black truffle on the menu of the restaursnts of Baldo suc has the Giardinetto, Kus and La Casa degli Spiriti.
