Roseto Valfortore

Wild roses are at the origin of the name of this small Apulian village in the valley of the Fortore river.
One of main appointments in the life of Roseto Valfortore is the throwing of the bread event or 'Lancio del pane' every final Sunday of May.
The event is a procession in honor of Saint Filippo Neri, the patron of Roseto.
As the crowd walk through the streets, pieces of bread, cheese and fruit are thrown from the windows of the houses to remind everyone of the charitable work of the holy man.
A further local legend says that the heavy statue of the Saint paraded through the streets will suddenly become light if one of the townsfolk agrees to open a hospice for the poor.
The annual 'Fiera dell'Artigianato e Dei Prodotti Tipici del Subappennino Dauno also takes place every final Sunday of June.
In Roseto you can find some great honey and local truffles and the main traditional dish is 'cavatelli pasta'.
Do not miss out on a visit to the water mills which where once the heart of village life.
