Walks of Italy

Walks of Italy

Walks of Italy began as a small-group and private walking tour company. Our tours won many accolades, including glowing reviews on TripAdvisor, the New York Times and in Rick Steves’ guidebooks.

More recently we’ve enjoyed an extremely positive write-up in the Rick Steves’ Rome 2012 guidebook and collaboration with Showtime® as the tour operator for its winners in the The Borgias television show sweepstakes.

It really is a stress free way to pack in as much as possible and with the special comfort of travelling in a small group of no more than 12 people.

After a Walks of Italy coordinator makes sure of your departure, an expert guide will meet you in Pompeii and also accompany you on your visit to Positano,

The drive along the Amalfi coast is truly spectacular with its twists and turns and if you have never experienced it before, you'll be glad for the professional driver.

Rome Market and Pizza Making Tour

Published in Food and Wine Tours
Monday, 20 February 2012 09:43

This food market tour in Rome is proposed by Walks of Italy and is located in and around perhaps the Eternal city's most atmospheric daily market, Campo de' Fiori.

Traditionally frequented by chefs and cooks from local restaurants and family trattorie, where they source seasonal ingredients, your guide will introduce you to a number of stalls, some owned by the same families for more than a century.

In total, there are 12 stops on your tour where you can sample a product.

They include fresh bread from a bakery, prosciutto crudo, Parmigiano Reggiano and Pecorino Romano cheeses, as well as mozzarella di bufala, Italian coffee, a typical dolce and fruit in season.

You will also have a chance to learn about extra virgin olive oil and traditional balsamic vinegar of Modena, and what the difference is between a 'Dop' and a 'Doc'.

But above all, you will be able to try your hand at pizza making at a local restaurant and see how Roman pizzas are very different from their Neapolitan cousins.

After your lesson, your pizza will be baked in a wood burning oven and then enjoyed in the restaurant.

After your tour you should be able to appreciate an authentic restaurant from a touristy one and how to eat well on authentic Roman street food.

Three Foods to Try in Venice

Published in Veneto Food
Sunday, 05 February 2012 10:05

Italian food is very regional—but food from Venice is one of our favorites. Seafood and pasta? Wine and pastries? Check, check and check!

Here, three dishes you just have to try while you're visiting Venice.

Sardee in saor

This antipasto sounds odd: It's sweet-and-sour sardines with onions, pine nuts and raisins. But even the name tells you it tastes delicious.

The translation of "sardee in saor"w ould actually be "sardines immersed in flavor"!

Onions show up often in Venetian cuisine because onions neutralize the bacteria that spoils food—something that Venetian sailors, spending such a long time at sea, would have been very familiar with!

Risi e bisi

Not quite a risotto, not quite a soup, this is a Venetian dish made of rice and peas (in Venetian dialect, "risi e bisi").

It's the dish that used to be offered to the Doge every St. Mark's Feast Day.

Risotto al nero di seppia

You see a lot of risotto in the north, and Venice is no exception. But here's the local twist: risotto drowned in black squid ink.

You'll also see nero di seppia served in a variety of other ways, including on vermicelli (long, thin noodles) or served with squid itself.

• Climb of the Torre del Moro for a spectacular view of the town and countryside
